The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery was founded in 1982 when Dr. Arthur M. Sackler, a New York research physician, donated approximately one thousand masterworks of Asian art. His immense collection included famous Chinese jades and ancient bronzes, necessitating a new Smithsonian museum dedicated to works from Asian nations. The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and the Freer Gallery of Art together form the Smithsonian’s national museums of Asian art in the United States.
To provide enhanced security and help protect against the damages of bomb blasts and other high-impact forces at The Arthur M Sackler Gallery, Commercial Security Window Film and Impact Protection Attachment Systems were installed.
The Sackler Gallery is located at 1050 Independence Avenue SW, while the Freer Gallery resides on Jefferson Drive at 12th Street SW. The two galleries are connected by underground exhibition space.
